DA HUANG
These four pictures are inspired by the classic book of mountains and seas, a masterpiece of ancient Chinese myths and legends. The book has described the huge amounts of lives that we are think they must be fictional today. I tried to present some characters of them by an acceptable, abstract and minimalist way to preform their models. It means try to find the key description of the character and show it with the least makeup what I could. I have focus on the chapter ‘wild’, there are three characters here. Gou Mang, YI and Yao Ji.
Gou Mang
句芒
Gou Mang is one of the characters in the book; it describes Gou Mang by a bird's body that has a human face, so I tried to use feathers for this and without overdoing makeup.
YI
羿
The photo on the left is Yi, Yi is a quite famous character in China. Different from other characters in the myths. Yi is believed to have existed thousands of years ago, and his archetype was probably a tribal chief.
The most famous myth of him is there were nine suns in the sky. In order to let his people survive, he shot down eight of them with his natural power, leaving the last one for people to keep living. So I selected the main stuff in this story, the bow to be the symbol of it
YAO JI
瑶姬
The photo on the right is Yao Ji. Yao Ji is the daughter of God in myth, but because she lost her way in the mountains and finally died in there, her body and plants merged into one after death and became the spirit stay in the deep of the mountain.
In this part, I chose plants as the symbol.
This group of photos was taken in a small town Kawagoe-shi near The model was wearing a kimono. This was a relaxed shot experience, and there was not much interference with her, but try to capture some of her natural demeanor.
This group of portraits was taken in the studio. Independent shooting completed.
